PRP & Stem Cell Therapy
Dr. Carter Sigmon is world renowned PRP Specialist! We are excited to be offering Fairbanks Ranch, Rancho Santa Fe, and San Diego his talents in arthritis and tendon injuries at Fairbanks Pharmacy & Med Spa.
This emerging innovative treatment has been demonstrated to promote a rapid healing response, reduced pain and a quicker return to activity.
For more than 20 years injectable platelet therapy had been used for a wide variety of medical treatments including oral surgery, dentistry and wound care. More recently, its application has extended to sports medicine, cardiovascular surgery, and cosmetic surgery. The safety of injectable platelets and growth factors has been well established in the medical literature.
Incomplete tendon healing after an injury is a common source of pain and dysfunction. Tendons may become inflamed (tendonitis), degenerated (tendinopathy) or torn. In addition, arthritis can lead to joint degeneration, swelling and pain. The injection of your own platelets and growth factors into injured tendons and joints has been demonstrated to safely alleviate pain and restore function without the associated risks of drugs or surgery.
A growing number of conditions have demonstrated improvement with platelet-rich plasma therapy

What is PRP Therapy?
You may have heard that platelet-rich plasma has been used to treat both professional and nonprofessional athletes for years, but what is it? When a tendon or ligament is injured, incomplete healing may occur. This can lead to chronic pain or a loss of function.
Our blood contains platelets which are cells designed to heal injuries. By extracting, concentrating and injecting platelets into injured tissue, we can facilitate healing and eliminate pain. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a revolutionary treatment that relieves pain by promoting long lasting healing of musculoskeletal conditions.
Physical therapy of the newly repaired tissues will help to restore pain-free mobility, strength and endurance.
How is PRP performed?
The procedure takes about 30-60 minutes and is performed in our clinic. A few ounces of blood are collected and the blood is placed in our state of the art centrifuge that gives us 6 times the platelet concentration of other clinics and also separates the different types of blood cells. The injury site is cleansed and numbed with a local anesthetic. The PRP solution is directed into the injured tissues under ultrasound guidance. Proteins are released from the PRP solution within minutes to start the healing process. Patients are advised to rest and use ice for any swelling that may occur within the first 72 hours. Most people resume normal activities within the week, however complete healing may take up to 3 months. Physical therapy is usually combined with PRP therapy to promote the return of strength and mobility.
A growing number of conditions have demonstrated improvement with platelet-rich plasma therapy. Clinical studies have demonstrated safety and efficacy for the treatment of: Advances in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US) have had a profound impact on the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. Diagnostic ultrasound, in the hands of our highly skilled physician, facilitates early and accurate diagnosis. Furthermore, treatments such as PRP are combined with ultrasound guidance to improve safety, comfort and positive outcome of your treatment. By identifying the general area where the injections need to be given, then applying ultrasound imaging we can see the joints, ligaments and tendons moving in real time. This allows us to pinpoint the area that needs to be treated and guide the injection exactly where it can provide the greatest healing benefit.
